In the middle of the Golden Coastline of Wenzhou, a city with a developed economy in East China lies a shining star. She locates in the Sanyang Wetland, surrounded by Daluo Mountains of Wenzhou. Her European style buildings naturally combined the local geographical features, perfectly blended into the picturesque setting surrounded by hills and water. Yes, she is Wenzhou Medical University.

 

With a history of over hundred years, Wenzhou Medical University now has four campuses, covering an area of 1,900 acres and is among the first group of universities granting master’s degrees with doctorates awarding entitlement. In 2001, WMU established the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences which has education programs for doctorates of Biological Therapy and Reproductive Medicine, and programs for masters of sciences in Pharmacy and Traditional Chinese Pharmacology. The school also opens undergraduate study in Traditional Chinese Pharmacology, Pharmaceutical Engineering, Clinical Medicine as well as Pharmacy for overseas students. Particularly, the school was among the first to admit international undergraduate students in the study of Science of Pharmacy. Currently, the school has over 1,200 students and a faculty of more than 110, including 17 professors, 42 associate professors, 72 doctorates, 12 tutors of Ph.D. students. Since the foundation, School of Pharmaceutical Sciences has now established a multilevel education system from self-taught students to undergraduates, graduates and Ph.D. candidate, from adult education to bachelor, master and doctorate degree.

 

At present, School of Pharmaceutical Sciences has an area of more than 6,400 square meters and over 2,000 pieces of medical devices. In addition, there are 55 advanced scientific instruments including flow cytometry, laser confocal microscope, proteomic quadrupole mass spectrometry, 600MHz NMR spectra, to assist scientific medical research and development for the school. Moreover, the school has an association for identification of poison that was approved by CNAS, and two labs were identified as provincial key labs in Zhejiang, and two teaching centers as provincial key examples in Zhejiang. All of these provides the reliable and advantageous base for the development of the school.

     

With the approval and verification of the Nation, School of Pharmaceutical Sciences established the first GAP Base for Traditional Chinese Medicinal Materials leading by many high education institutes, forming a salient feature by placing emphasis on the combination of academic study and research. The school established Rust Biotech CO., LTD., WMU Bio and Natural Drug Research Center CO., LTD., WMU Tianrui Curcuma Aromatica Salisb Tech Research CO., LTD., Wenzhou Anderson Biotech CO., LTD., etc, all of which have been playing an active role not only in product research and development but also in making significant contribution to the local economy.

 

Over the past years, the school has been undertaking many significant projects in new drug invention and production in China such as the 863 Plan and 973 Plan. In addition, there have been 111 national established funds for nature, 93 academic research projects at the provincial and ministerial level, 527 published research papers as well as 91 patents of invention. What’s more, our students have also achieved excellent performance in China Undergraduates Challenge Cup, China Undergraduates Medical Forum as well as Zhejiang Province Challenge Cup. All these glory and attainments would not have been achieved without the continuous joint effort of the research team of the school.

 

Not only the school values academic study and research, but also pays attention to the global events. For example, the school has organized and held Meeting of Research in Fibroblast Growth Factor for mutable times and took part in Hong Kong Obesity and Diabetes Seminar. Also, the school has incubated cooperative relationship with many well-known universities such as Harvard University, Rockefeller University, and established joint projects with Brighton University, Thailand Oriental University as well as the university of Louisville. The school also acquires high recognition by welcoming foremost international expertise as honorary professors, invited professors and visiting professors into our endeavors to better serve the people.
